Defender Kim Min-jae of Beijing Guoan is likely to join Turkish football team Fenerbahçe S.K.
The Turkish club announced on its social media on Sunday that it had begun negotiations to sign Kim, who will undergo a medical check in Istanbul, where the club is based.
Kim appears to have accepted a huge pay cut in exchange for the opportunity to play in Europe. Turkish daily Sözcü said on Tuesday that Kim, who is paid 3.5 million euros a year by the Beijing side, had agreed to a salary of 2 million euros from Fenerbahçe.
German-based football website Transfermarkt estimated the likelihood of his transfer to Fenerbahçe at 98 percent, adding that the chances of him joining Portuguese club Porto, which has also expressed an interest in him, had dropped to 49 percent.
Vitor Pereira, who took the helm of the Turkish club this season, reportedly insisted on signing Kim. Pereira was impressed by Kim's performance when he coached Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League from 2017 to last year.
Fenerbahçe is a prestigious club that has collected 19 titles in the Turkish league. Former German national team member Mesut Özil currently plays for the club.
