Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis on Wednesday released its first electric vehicle, the G80 EV.
The electric version of the G80 model has a solid radiator grille, as it is powered by an 87.2-kWh battery and thus there is no need to cool the engine.
On a full battery, it can travel up to 427 km. With superfast charging, the battery can be charged up to 80 percent capacity in just 22 minutes. The G80 EV can accelerate from a full stop to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The EV is safer than the regular G80, with 17 percent greater body stiffness.
The G80 EV is priced at W82.81 million, but taking into account government subsidies, out-of-pocket costs may well be under W80 million (US$1=W1,137).
Meanwhile, Hyundai said on Wednesday it will participate in the RE100 global initiative for clean energy along with its four other affiliates -- Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Wia and Hyundai Transys.
The initiative aims to commit the world's most influential businesses to 100 percent renewable electricity to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Among Korean companies, SK Group's eight affiliates are already on board, while worldwide, 310 companies have joined it.
Hyundai has set a goal of being 100-percent reliant on renewable energy by 2040, by installing solar panels on the roofs of its factories and buildings and purchasing electricity from producers of renewables. Its Asan plant in South Chungcheong Province has been equipped with solar panels since 2013, producing 13,000 MWh of electricity a year. Kia's Slovakia plant has been using 100 percent renewable energy since 2019.
