The first monsoon rains this summer will fall this weekend, pouring up to 50 mm of precipitation an hour on some regions, enough to inundate flatlands and causing creeks to overflow.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said Thursday that the monsoon rain front that has been hovering in the East China Sea will head north and a low-pressure front is approaching from the west and bringing rainfall starting with Jeju Island on Saturday morning.
Southern coastal areas and central parts will see thunderstorms with between 50 and 150 mm of rainfall until Sunday.
From Saturday afternoon, the western coastal region and Jeju will experience gusts of 35-60 km/h and even 70 km/h. Wave alerts are likely to be issued on the western and southern seas and around Jeju.
The monsoon front is expected to taper off temporarily on Sunday afternoon, but the rains are here to stay all next week in southern parts, while central parts will see rainfall return mid-week.
