Ex-Busan Mayor Oh Keo-don was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday for sexually harassing female staff.
He was also ordered to attend 40 hours of sex offender treatment with a five-year ban on work in public facilities related to helping children, youngsters and the disabled.
"Oh sexually assaulted two public servants, making this a case of sexual harassment in the workplace in which the accused abused his senior position," a Busan district court ruled.
The court added that Oh was not only the mayor but also a former government minister and president of two universities, which all require a higher level of ethical responsibility than ordinary jobs, so his punishment cannot be mitigated.
Oh resigned as mayor of Korea's second-biggest city in April last year after admitting that he sexually harassed a civil servant in his office. It was later revealed that he harassed another woman in 2018.
