The makeover of the grey concrete wastes of Gwanghwamun Plaza will be completed by April 2022 after all, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday.
The multi-lane road in front of the Sejong Center of Performing Arts that turns the plaza effectively into a vast traffic island will be pedestrianized and planted with trees, redirecting traffic along the opposite side alone.
The plaza, which leads to Gyeongbok Palace, will display artifacts from the Chosun Dynasty, newly excavated from the site. Other plans include the renovation of the underground exhibition halls dedicated to King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-shin.
The city's new mayor, Oh Se-hoon, has promised to continue with the project started by his predecessor, which met with some resistance from the central government.
