Cosmetics sales are rebounding after a slump amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Health and beauty chain CJ Olive Young earned W107.2 billion from a summer sale from June 3 to 9 (US$1=W1,115). It is the first time the retailer sold more than W100 billion worth of beauty products in a week-long sale event, up 30 percent from a spring sale in March and 15 percent from the 2019 summer sale.
Compared to the spring sale, sales of makeup soared 25 percent and of skincare products 23 percent. Makeup products showed a marked rebound after they were hit particularly hard by the pandemic.
Last year at Lotte Department Store, makeup sales plunged 26 percent from the previous year as everyone wore masks, compared to a mere four percent for skincare products.
