President Moon Jae-in has expressed hope for closer ties between Korean vaccine producer SK Bioscience and U.S. company Novavax, whose vaccine is now in the approval process.
Moon made the remarks when he met with Novavax CEO Stanley Erck at Cheong Wa Dae on Tuesday. Novavax has contracted SK Bioscience to produce 40 million doses of the vaccine.
"Koreans have high hopes for the Novavax vaccine. I have heard that the vaccine is also effective against the U.K. and South Africa variants based on clinical tests carried out after the new strains emerged," Moon said. "The government will support cooperation between the two companies."
Noting the vaccine's easy storage and long shelf-life, Moon said he hopes its efficacy and safety will be proven in the approval process before production begins.
There were initially problems securing raw materials, but they have been resolved. Local production is expected to start in June.
