Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon has apologized to the victim of sexual harassment at the hands of his predecessor Park Won-soon.

The apology came a year after the victim, a former secretary of Park, reported the abuses to Seoul City Hall, where they were ignored.

This is the first time City Hall has officially acknowledged the wrongdoings of the former mayor, who committed suicide after the victim went to the police.

Oh told reporters at City Hall on Tuesday, "As the incumbent mayor of Seoul, I apologize sincerely for the sexual harassment and sexual assault that happened during the term of the former mayor. I also offer my deepest sympathy to the victim and family who must have endured an unbearably difficult time over the past year."

The mayor added that the way City Hall handled the matter was "extremely deficient."

But when asked if the Seoul city government intends to reinvestigate the abuses, Oh only said, "I was asked to conduct a thorough investigation to get to the truth."

He added he wants to help the victim return to work and promised to implement a "one-strike" rule sacking any city official caught sexually harassing others and to set up a hotline to report such abuses.

The victim issued a statement and said the incumbent mayor's atonement was a "genuine apology from a person who knows what the wrongdoing was." She added that she was moved to tears by Oh's careful use of words in consideration of her position.
