The current lockdown will continue, although new coronavirus infections hover around 700 a day and the government faces yet another setback for its vaccination plans.

The daily tally of new infections stood at 671 on Friday morning after 700 cases a day earlier.

Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun on Friday said the government decided to keep the current level of social distancing including a ban on gatherings of five or more people in place, but certain businesses that draw crowds could face tougher restrictions.

"The curfew for businesses like cafés or karaoke bars, for example, is currently 10 p.m., but that could be readjusted to 9 p.m. if necessary," he said.

Health and Welfare Minister Kwon Deok-cheol told reporters Thursday that the government is considering ways to "improve the effectiveness" of lockdown by focusing on certain facilities that are vulnerable to infections.
