BMW will recall more than 220,000 cars due to a fire risk, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Thursday.

Some 221,172 cars in 31 models, including the 320d and 520d, will be recalled after it was found that the exhaust gas recirculation cooler could crack, potentially causing a fire.

The EGR cooler is a component that reduces air pollutants in vehicles with diesel engines. It was also blamed for a series of fires in BMW's diesel cars in 2018.

After the 2018 incidents, BMW conducted a recall and replaced the vehicles' EGR coolers. But the carmaker found cracks in some of the replacement parts during an inspection in May last year.

BMW plans to replace the coolers of 107,731 cars, and will inspect the remaining 113,441 cars and decide whether to replace their parts.

Owners can get their cars repaired for free at BMW service centers from next week.
