The number of stock investors has surpassed 9 million as about 3 million more people embraced the bourse last year. About a half of the newcomers are in their 20s and 30s.
According to the Korea Securities Depository, the number of individual investors stood at 9.11 million last year, up 2.99 million from 6.12 million in 2019. In 2016 there were only 4.89 million of them.
Some 740,000 more people in their 30s jumped into the stock market last year, the biggest increase among all age groups. The number of 20-something investors increased by about 690,000 to 1.07 million. There are even 273,710 investors under 20, up 2.8 times from the year before.
But people in their 40s still make up the biggest proportion at 2.21 million.
Some 5.22 million men outnumbered their 3.89 million female counterparts, but the ratio of female investors increased to 42.7 percent, the highest on record.
