Huawei is demanding royalties from Samsung and Apple for using its 5G mobile communication patents.
The beleaguered Chinese tech giant had not shown any interest in collecting patent royalties so far as it focused on products. But now it is going on the offensive after being cornered by U.S. trade sanctions.
According to Bloomberg on Tuesday, Huawei is "capping per-phone royalties at US$2.50," which is less than Qualcomm and Nokia. Apple pays Qualcomm $7.50 per phone.
Huawei claims it is owed between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion in royalty payments from 2019 to 2021, but did not specify the proportion of 5G-related fees.
Huawei has the most 5G-related patents in the world, accounting for 15.4 percent of the total. If it has its way, Samsung and Apple could end up paying hundreds of billions, but Samsung said it has yet to receive any notification from Huawei in the matter.
