Actress Lee Ji-eun, a star of the big and small screen in the 1990s, was found dead in her apartment in Seoul on Tuesday.
Police were called to the scene by a friend after Lee (52) was not answering her calls.
Police said she had stopped breathing for unknown reasons and an autopsy will determine the cause of death. All that is known so far is that Lee was living alone after her son started his mandatory military service.
The pixie-faced actress, who studied in Japan, debuted as a model in 1994 and started her acting career in the same year.
She won a Blue Dragon Film Award and a Daejong Film Award the following year for her performance in "My Dear Keumhong" and became a teen idol as she played a tomboy, which was rare at the time, in a TV series.
She appeared in several more TV series and films, including the late movie director Kim Ki-duk's "Birdcage Inn."
