Some W4.8 trillion worth of damaged Korean banknotes were incinerated last year, the biggest amount since W50,000 notes entered circulation in 2009 (US$1=W1,115).
A total of 642.6 million notes were damaged in one way or another.
The increase is largely due to coronavirus as many mildly damaged bills were destroyed to stem the spread of the infection.
The BOK also disinfected many bills by exposing them to high temperatures after storing them for at least two weeks.
