Kim Ha-seong of San Diego Padres Sets His Sights High

Kim Ha-seong has high hopes for his first year with the San Diego Padres.

Kim, who signed a four-year deal worth US$28 million last week with the Padres, stated his goals of winning a World Series with the club and the Rookie of the Year Award for himself in an introductory videoconference on Tuesday.

"The Padres are not only a contender but [could] become the World Series champion this year," Kim said through an interpreter. "I want to be part of a winning team. That's why I joined the San Diego Padres. I can play any position in the infield."

Padres general manager A. J. Preller expressed confidence about Kim's chances of success, noting Kim's ability to fit any infield position. "We'll look at every possible option and figure that out," Preller said. "But originally and right out of the gate, we see [Kim] as an infielder."

He also said the club's scouting team reviewed Kim's stats dating back to his high school days, which gave the club "a lot of faith" as they were able to see Kim's "progression" and "adjustments" as a professional baseball player in Korea.

"These are great players," Kim responded. "They have more experience. Just by training with them and playing along with them, I will learn and grow as a player."
