For the first time in 67 year the giant bell at Bosingak Bell Pavilion will not ring on Dec. 31 to welcome in the New Year. The event has been a fixture since 1953.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Sunday canceled the event after cumulative coronavirus infections in the capital surpassed 10,000.

Seoul city officials are thinking about recording a bell-ringing ceremony in advance and broadcasting it online. They will prevent revelers from converging near the bell on New Year's Eve.
