The accumulated number of coronavirus infections in Seoul reached 9,421 on Thursday, accounting for 0.097 percent of the capital's population of 9.68 million. That means around one in every 1,000 people had the virus, including people arriving from abroad.

Some 3,365 or 35.7 percent of the cases occurred since Nov. 1 when group infections sporadically surged in facilities such as hospitals, gyms and saunas.

On Wednesday alone, 262 people tested positive in Seoul, the highest number since the first case in the capital occurred on Jan. 24, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.

The total number of new cases in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province combined stood at a record 425 on Wednesday. The area accounts for 50.2 percent of the country's total population but 78.7 percent of new cases nationwide. That is natural since the capital region is so densely populated.

Health authorities are concerned that the situation in Seoul has reached dangerous proportions because many new infections are occurring among families and friends or from untraceable sources.

Korea reported some 629 new cases as of Friday morning, surpassing 600 for the first time in nearly nine months.

Despite the tightened lockdown, the figure is unlikely to dwindle anytime soon, as the annual university exam Thursday which half a million high-school students sat could have been another source of infections and further tests loom.
