The number of new coronavirus infections stood at 100 as of Tuesday morning following 143 and 126 the previous days.

According to health authorities, average weekly infections also increased for the fifth week in a row from 57.4 during the first week of October to 88.7 last week.

Kang Do-tae at the Ministry of Health and Welfare warned Monday that social distancing could be tightened again if the current trend continues.

Health workers disinfect a prison in Gwangju on Monday after a staffer there tested positive for coronavirus.

Small group infections are spreading beyond the capital. Sixteen were reported in a medical equipment outlet in Wonju, Gangwon Province, and 10 from a coffee shop in Daegu. Six more have occurred in a bank in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province.

Health officials fear that infections can keep increasing as the winter approaches as respiratory viruses like COVID-19 tend to survive better in colder and drier environments.
