President Moon Jae-in on Sunday tweeted his congratulations to Joe Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris in the hotly contested U.S. presidential election.
"Congratulations to @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris. Our alliance is strong and the bond between our two countries is rock-solid," Moon wrote. "I very much look forward to working with you for our shared values. I have great expectations of advancing and opening up the future development of our bilateral relations."
Biden is a supporter of a more traditional South Korea-U.S.-Japan alliance than his disruptive predecessor Donald Trump, who is refusing to concede.
On North Korea policy, Biden said in a lecture at Yonsei University during his visit to Korea in December 2013 that the world must not return to the "pattern of rewarding [North Korea] for its bad behavior."
Former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min wrote on his Facebook account on Sunday that "fake peace shows" that were staged by Trump and Moon while being "dragged around by Kim Jong-un" will no longer be acceptable.
Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha flew to the U.S. on Sunday, ostensibly to meet outgoing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, but also in the hope of meeting some senior figures in the incoming administration.
