Former President Lee Myung-bak is going back to jail for 17 years for corruption and embezzlement after the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a lower court's ruling.
Since being released on bail in February, Lee spent about eight months out of prison while the appeal was pending.
He was indicted in April of 2018 of 16 offenses and found guilty of embezzling W34.9 billion from a car parts company he owned by proxy and receiving W11.1 billion in bribes while in office (US$1=W1,134).
At first instance he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but the appeals court sentenced him to two more years because it determined more of the money had been straight-up bribes.
