An increasing number of elderly Koreans are dying alone without family or friends to take care of them.
According to data released by the Ministry of Health and Welfare on Sunday, the number of people over 65 who died unattended stood at 1,145 last year, up 55.8 percent from 735 in 2016.
In total, 2,356 people died alone in 2019.
The ministry expects the figure will continue to rise as the number of single elderly households increases and the coronavirus epidemic isolates them further.
