Can Black Pink replicate the success of boy band Bangtan Boys, also known as BTS, and land at No. 1 on the U.S. charts?
The girl band released their first studio album, titled "The Album," online last week, and the lead track "Lovesick Girls" immediately topped the iTunes charts in 57 countries. That bodes well for their entry into the Billboard charts this week.
Just one day after the music video of "Lovesick Girls" was unveiled on Oct. 2, it had garnered over 60 million views. Black Pink already have 49 million subscribers to their YouTube channel, second only to Justin Bieber's 57 million.
The album contains eight tracks including "Bet You Wanna" featuring Cardi B and "Ice Cream" featuring Selena Gomez.
The album is to be available in CDs from Tuesday and has already sold over 1 million copies in pre-orders -- 670,000 in Korea and 340,000 in Europe and the U.S. A limited edition of 18,888 vinyl records is sold out.
Black Pink, who are with the YG Entertainment stable, signed with Interscope Records under the Universal Music Group in 2018 to involve themselves more actively in the U.S. music scene.
In an online press event celebrating the release, member Jennie said, "The album shows us maturing over the last four years since our debut." And fellow member Rose added, "We really wanted to show all the music that Black Pink is capable of."
