President Moon Jae-in talked to Japan's new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on the phone Thursday for the first time since his inauguration last week.

The last time the leaders of Korea and Japan spoke was in China in December last year.

They reportedly agreed that the bilateral and trilateral cooperation among Seoul, Tokyo and Washington is "important" for peace on the Korean Peninsula. Suga also promised to work together with Korea to overcome the coronavirus pandemic.

In a recent acknowledgement of Moon's congratulations on his inauguration, Suga said that he hopes the two countries can build a "future-oriented relationship by overcoming difficult problems."
