The Supreme Court on Thursday rules on Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung's appeal against a conviction of abuse of power and violating election law.
Lee was convicted of having his now-dead older brother sectioned in a mental hospital in 2012 and lying about it during a TV debate in the run-up to the election in 2018.
A lower court cleared him but the appeals court overturned the ruling and fined him around W3 million for violating the election law (US$1=W1,202).
If the top court rules against him, Lee will be stripped of his governorship and banned from seeking political office for five years.
The ruling is set for 2 p.m. and will be livestreamed on YouTube and broadcast live on TV.
