German automaker BMW staged the global premiere of its 5 and 6 Series sedans at a driving center on Yongjeong Island west of Seoul on Wednesday.

This is the first time that a foreign automaker has staged a global premiere of a new model here. The reason was that Koreans bought the most 5 Series BMWs in the world in the first four months of this year.

The new sedans went through some partial design tweaks including bigger grilles and sharper-looking headlights.

The auxiliary battery was changed from 12 to 48 volts to offer better fuel efficiency. But the sedans will not hit showrooms here until the fourth quarter of this year.

The unveiling was staged in a drive-in venue to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Participants rode one of 60 BMWs lined up at the driving center and watched the event on an 854-inch screen, while speakers were beamed into their radios.
