Tech-savvy Korea has beaten slow, bureaucratic Japan in quickly and efficiently dishing out its coronavirus relief payments.

Bloomberg reported Wednesday that it took no time for Koreans to receive the aid through wireless bank transfers, while Japanese had to wait in line for hours to apply for it.

"The contrasting speed and efficiency of distributing virus relief to people in need in Japan and [Korea] come despite a remarkably similar trajectory in putting together the funding for the handouts in the two Northeast Asia rivals. That difference reveals a nimbler and more tech-savvy administrative infrastructure in Korea more suited to swift action than the lengthy paper-centric approach of Japan," it wrote.

As of Tuesday, around 80 percent of households in Korea had got their payments, though they had not always spent them wisely. Meanwhile in Japan, only 19 percent of local governments have started distributing the money.
