Many people drink coffee in the morning in order to perk up for the day, but it may not be the safest choice for everyone. The habit can be harmful to people suffering from chronic headaches and gastroesophageal reflux, commonly known as heartburn.
Coffee contains caffeine, which has a painkilling effect, making it popular among people who experience headaches, but it can cause a problem when they are chronic.
Kim Byung-kun of the Eulji Medical Center said, "Coffee acts as a painkiller due to caffeine, but weakens the body's defense mechanism against pain, possibly leading to worse headaches. So people with chronic headaches should avoid drinking coffee every morning."
The warning also applies to those suffering from heartburn.
Kang Jae-heon at Samsung Medical Center said, "Caffeine in coffee has the effect of waking you up, but also stimulates the secretion of stomach acid. People suffering from heartburn or ulcers could suffer worsening symptoms if they drink coffee in the morning on an empty stomach."
Kang advises those with gastric problems to drink tea or lukewarm water instead in the morning.
