A sixth case of African swine fever was confirmed on Wednesday at a farm in Incheon, west of Seoul. It came just a day after the fifth case was confirmed in the same region. Inspections are currently under way for another suspected case in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is inspecting pig farms and livestock-related facilities across the country. All of Gyeonggi Province is now under quarantine, as are the city of Incheon and Gangwon Province.

Gyeonggi officials said the province will cull almost 40,000 pigs near a farm in Paju where a case has been confirmed. That will bring the total number of pigs put down to more than 50,000 nationwide.

The highly contagious African swine fever is harmless to humans but fatal to pigs.
