North Korea wants to conduct a population census without the help of a UN agency, the UN Population Fund said Wednesday.
North Korea's last census was conducted by UNFPA in 2008 with support from South Korea , which provided US$4 million.
In 2017, UNFPA asked the South to contribute another $6 million for a population survey, but now North Korea apparently does not want the outside world to see the miserable circumstances of its people.
Meanwhile, in a survey of 200 North Korean defectors by Unification Media Group, a civilian broadcaster in South Korea that airs programs for North Koreans, 91 percent of respondents said they watched programs from South Korea and other foreign countries while living in the North.
Some 71.5 percent said it has become more dangerous to access information from the outside world since Kim Jong-un came to power.
