Korea defeated South Africa in their second group match at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland on Tuesday.
Defender Kim Hyun-woo's header in the second half secured a vital 1-0 victory, taking Korea closer to the round of 16.
Korea is now in second place in the group with Argentina, Portugal and South Africa.
In its first match last Saturday, Korea lost to Portugal 1-0.
Both Korea and Portugal, which lost 2-0 to Argentina earlier on Tuesday, have earned three points from a win and a loss, but Korea is ahead of Portugal on goal difference -- 0 versus -1.
A win or a draw against group leader Argentina on Friday will make it easier for Korea to clinch a berth in the knockout stage. If Korea loses to Argentina and Portugal defeats South Africa, Korea will fall to third place, which does not guarantee a spot in the next stage.
The top two teams from each of the six groups will advance, along with the four best third-place finishers.
