The nephew of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has thanked the leader of a shadowy anti-North Korean dissident group for rescuing him after his father Kim Yong-nam was assassinated by North Korean agents in Kuala Lumpur in 2017.
In a video clip published by Channel A on Tuesday, Kim Han-sol expresses his gratitude to Adrian Hong Chang, the leader of Free Joseon, and his team. The group, which was also behind a daredevil raid on the North Korean Embassy in Madrid this February, e-mailed the clip to the channel.
The clip had already been published in a censored form by the group, then calling itself Cheollima Civil Defense, in March 2017, but Kim Han-sol's voice was muted and his mouth obscured whenever he mentioned "Adrian" Hong Chang, apparently to protect the group leader's identity.
But Hong's cover has since been blown by Spanish authorities investigating the raid.
The group in a statement just after Kim junior's rescue said he was spirited out of Macau, where he was living, with the help of the U.S., Chinese and Dutch governments right after his father was assassinated in February 2017. He is now thought to live in the U.S.
Hong is on the run from U.S. law enforcement after an apparent falling-out with the FBI, which Free Jeoson claimed has been given access to files stolen in the Madrid embassy raid, and the release of the video may be part of a campaign to save him.
