Nine out of every 10 Koreans in their 60s accessed the Internet on their computers or smartphones last year, according to a report by the Ministry of Science and ICT on Sunday. A decade ago, the rate stood at just two out of 10.

Internet use among people in their 60s rose from 19 percent in 2008 to 88.8 percent last year.

The increase is attributed to the spread of smartphones. Internet usage grew at the second-fastest clip among people in their 50s, doubling from 48.9 to 98.7 percent over the same period.

Average Internet use time was 16 hours and 30 minutes a week, up 0.8 hours. The report was based on interviews with 59,970 people from July to September last year.
