Samsung is set to end the year as the world's No. 1 semiconductor maker for the second year in a row. U.S. chipmaker Intel is forecast to be in second place, followed by SK Hynix, whose sales are expected to grow 41 percent this year.
According to U.S. market researcher IC Insights, Samsung's chip sales will reach US$83.3 billion, $13.1 billion more than Intel, which had held the top spot since 1993 but fell behind Samsung last year.
SK Hynix is expected to post $37.7 billion in sales this year, overtaking Taiwan's TSMC.
