The U.S. has warned it may resume large-scale joint exercises with South Korea early next year unless North Korea keeps its promise to denuclearize, Kyodo News reported Tuesday.
It quoted diplomatic sources as saying U.S. officials repeatedly notified Japan of the plan since September.
After the annual Security Consultative Meeting in Washington on Oct. 31, South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo said the annual spring exercises will be reviewed by officials by Nov. 15 and a decision will be made by Dec. 1.
A diplomatic source here said there are subtle differences between Seoul and Washington over how and when to resume the joint drills.
