About 6 million mobile phones are now in use in North Korea, Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said Monday. Cho was speaking at the National Assembly's budget committee.
This means that roughly one in four of North Korea's 25 million people owns a mobile phone.
Cho said video clips of South Korean pop stars like Bangtan Boys, also known as BTS, "are in circulation among young North Koreans despite restrictions on Internet access as their mobile phones operate like a closed network."
He added the North uses a 3G network and phones cost between US$100 and $200.
