BMW will recall an additional 65,000 cars in 52 models over problems with the exhaust recirculation modules that have been blamed for spontaneous engine fires in its cars earlier this year.

In July the German carmaker recalled a massive 106,317 cars in 42 models after a series of mysterious fires.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Tuesday that BMW decided to recall 65,763 vehicles including 7,222 of the 118d, which was found by a ministry investigation to be at risk of catching fire.

Other models affected include the MINI Cooper D, MINI Countryman, MINI Paceman and MINI Clubman.

BMW said most of the cars subject to the latest recall have a lower risk of catching fire, but it decided to recall them as part of its preventative measures.
