Short track speed skating star Viktor Ahn, the two-time triple-crown winner at the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics and at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, is expected to leave Russia to resettle in Korea.
Ahn (33), whose Korean name is Ahn Hyun-soo, will wrap up his athletic career and wants to raise his child in Korea, Interfax News quoted Alexei Kravtsov, the president of the Russian Skating Union, as saying Wednesday.
Ahn has a three-year-old daughter with his wife Woo Na-ri (34).
Ahn had hoped to take part in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics early this year, but the International Olympic Committee did not allow it. The IOC banned Russia over a doping scandal but permitted individual Russian athletes to compete after strict doping tests.
Ahn, who became a naturalized Russian citizen in 2011, did not test positive for any drugs but was still banned for unknown reasons. News reports had it that Ahn was listed in a report published by Richard McLaren, a professor at the Western University in Ontario, Canada, about the Russian doping scandal for the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2016.
Ahn appeared on a KBS TV program about parenting recently and also took part in another reality show on MBC that will be aired soon.
It seems he will not have to reapply for Korean citizenship. A Justice Ministry official here said, "Even a foreigner can stay in the country with a marriage visa if his wife has Korean citizenship."
"If Ahn wants to have his Korean citizenship reinstated, the ministry will review his application," he added.
