North Korean general Hwang Pyong-so, who is believed to have been sacked last year, appears to have been reinstated.
North Korea's state media reported Saturday that leader Kim Jong-un visited border regions with China and Hwang accompanied him.
Hwang's whereabouts had been unknown since October last year. Hwang seems to have been sent to re-education at the Kim Il-sung Advanced Party School.
According to intelligence officials, Hwang was sacked in a power struggle led by Vice Marshal Choe Ryong-hae, who appeared to be Kim's second-in-command until a recent flurry of international diplomacy sidelined him.
Hwang in turn had been responsible for Choe's sacking back in May 2014, which apparently prompted Choe to seek revenge. His reinstatement suggests a divide-and-rule strategy by Kim to keep Choe in check and deny any one military dinosaur too much power.
