North Korea's state media in a rare departure from practice on Monday reported that their leader Kim Jong-un is visiting Singapore to meet U.S. President Donald Trump.

The regime at first seemed nervous that discontent in the unruly military or the Pyongyang elite could bubble over in his absence.

But now Kim's every move in Singapore is broadcast live around the world, it would have been difficult for the regime to keep a lid on all news.

By contrast, state media reported on Kim's two summits with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China only after he returned to Pyongyang.

On May 27, the official Rodong Sinmun merely announced the date of the summit but not the location.

The state media also kept quiet about a recent visit to the U.S. by Kim's right-hand man Kim Yong-chol and his meeting with Trump at the White House.
