SK Chief's Divorce Goes to Court

The divorce proceedings of SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won and his wife Roh Soh-yeong will be decided in acrimonious trial after the couple failed to agree terms.

The couple tied the knot in 1988 and have one son and two daughters but have been living apart for many years.

Their dispute became public when Chey sent a letter to a news outlet in December 2015 saying his relationship with his wife has grown "far too distant for more than 10 years" and that he had met someone "who comforts his heart" and has a child with her.

Chey filed for divorce in July of last year but Roh refused.

Supreme Court precedent prevents the party responsible for causing the break-up of a marriage from suing for divorce, but a slew of uncontested lower-court rulings have sided with the guilty party if the relationship has been weakened considerably prior to the infraction.
