A Korean woman has been found brutally murdered in Bolivia, the Foreign Ministry said Saturday.
The woman, who was in her 40s, was found on Isla del Sol in Lake Titicaca last Thursday night with stab wounds to her neck and chest. The body was covered with rocks.
The island is a popular tourist destination in the picturesque lake on the border between Bolivia and Peru.
The woman, who was identified by her surname Cho, had been traveling alone and checked into a hotel there last Tuesday.
Police took the body to the capital La Paz and an autopsy was conducted in the presence of a Korean Embassy staffer. Police said there were signs of rape and her body appears to have been mutilated.
A Foreign Ministry official said, "We've asked Bolivian police for a thorough investigation and a speedy apprehension of the criminal."
Bolivia is a popular tourist destination but plagued by poverty and civil unrest, which prompted the ministry to issue a travel warning.
