President Moon Jae-in and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump on Thursday agreed to delay joint annual military drills until after the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in February.

The agreement came in a telephone conversation between the two leaders, Cheong Wa Dae said.

Moon was quoted as telling Trump it would be "of great help" in ensuring a peaceful and successful Olympics to postpone the drills and avoid further North Korean provocations.

Trump promised to send a member of his family with the U.S. delegation to the games.

The annual drills normally kick off in late February or early March, but that would overlap with at least the Paralympics, which end on March 18.
