Tokyo will conduct nuclear evacuation drills to prepare for nuclear and missile attacks from North Korea from next year.
The Japanese government plans to conduct evacuation drills for residents in central Tokyo between January and March next year to prepare for a ballistic missile attack, the Sankei Shimbun reported Sunday. This will be the first time a highly populated metropolitan area like Tokyo conducts such a drill because the Japanese government has so far avoided alarming the populace unnecessarily.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told the Budget Committee of the House of Councilors, or upper house, last week that he would pressure local governments to designate sturdy buildings or underground facilities as shelters and conduct evacuation drills in densely populated areas.
Last Friday, Hawaii conducted a nuclear evacuation drill for the first time since the end of the Cold War. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency sounded all 385 warning sirens across the island for about a minute.
Hawaiians stayed indoors for 15 minutes and tuned into an emergency frequency on the radio. Schoolchildren in the state also took part in a duck-and-cover drill after locking doors and switching off air-conditioners.
But few people joined in at the popular beach of Waikiki on Oahu, where the sirens could barely be heard.
