An earthquake of an estimated magnitude of 5.8 was detected off North Korea's eastern coast on Thursday.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremor occurred some 176 km offshore in the East Sea at precisely 4:18 a.m. local time.
It does not appear to have been caused by a nuclear test, Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis told Reuters.
