Four Korean universities made it to the top 100 in the global rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds of the U.K.
Seoul National University ranked 36th, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 41st, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in 71st, and Korea University 90th.
Yonsei and Sungkyunkwan universities just missed the top 100 in 106th and 108th. Hanyang University moved up 16 notches to 155th place, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies came 397th.

Korean universities' world rankings have been improving, but none has made the top 30 yet, in contrast to many other East Asian countries. Singapore's Nanyang Technological University is in 11th place and National University of Singapore in 15th. China's Tsinghua University is in 25th, University of Hong Kong in 26th, University of Tokyo in 28th, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 30th.
QS explained that Korea's top universities have high academic and employer reputation but fall short on research and international faculty and students.
With an exception of ETH Zurich in 10th, all universities in the top 10 are either in the U.S. or the U.K.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the list for the fourth year, followed by Stanford, Harvard, California Institute of Technology, and the University of Cambridge.
