A 32-year-old Kazakh jumped to his death on Monday night from Seoullo, the new flyover park near Seoul Station, police said Tuesday.

The man mounted the guardrail between a stairway and a kiosk at the park, and despite attempts to talk him down by police officers and visitors, went over a 1.4-m tempered glass panel and fell 10 m on the road below.

He was taken to Seoul Paik Hospital nearby but died around 8 a.m. Tuesday. He had come to Korea on a work visa late last August.

The park, which is loosely modeled on New York's High Line, opened to the public only 10 days ago.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is considering increasing the number of night guards from the current five. A city official promised to work out better safety measures with the help of police and fire authorities but added there are no plans to raise the security fences.

The glass panels, which had originally been designed to be 1.2 m high, were already raised 20 cm to increase safety.
