Kim Jong-nam was killed by a huge dose of the banned VX nerve agent and died a painful death within 15 to 20 minutes, AP reported Sunday quoting Malaysian authorities.

Malaysian Health Minister Subramaniam Sathasivam told reporters that the autopsy showed the dose of VX given to Kim was so high that he showed symptoms within minutes.

Kim fainted at the airport clinic and died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. "VX only requires 10 milligrams to be absorbed into the system to be lethal, so I presume that the amount of dose that went in is more than that," he said.

"The doses were so high and it did it so fast and all over the body, so it would have affected his heart, it would have affected his lungs, it would have affected everything."

The minister said the autopsy results will be handed over to Malaysian police and added that if Kim's family do not show up to identify him, Malaysian authorities will take other measures to verify his identity, either through dental records or other distinguishing marks on his body.

Sathasivam also said rescue workers who transported Kim to hospital may have been exposed to the poison, which is classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the UN.

Although nobody has shown symptoms of VX exposure, Malaysian authorities are monitoring their health, he said.
