Disgraced CJ Group chairman Lee Jay-hyun is to seek medical treatment in the U.S. and return to Korea early next year in hopes of reassuming the helm of the conglomerate.

Lee suffers from Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a neurological condition characterized by progressive degeneration of the muscles in the feet, lower legs and hands, and was sprung from jail under an amnesty in August, where he was serving two years and six months for corruption.

A CJ executive said Lee will leave as soon as he gets his U.S. visa late this month or early next month. He is to undergo extensive treatment at a specialist hospital in California.

His sister, CJ Entertainment and Media vice chairwoman Lee Mie-kyung, is also being treated in the hospital for the same ailment.

Industry insiders expect Lee to return to managing his conglomerate early next year. Lee's condition got so bad at one point that he had trouble holding a chopstick but has improved since he was pardoned. Now he is able to walk short distances using a cane.
