Four Korean universities have made it into the world's top 100 in the latest world rankings.
In this year's ranking released by Quacquarelli Symonds of the U.K. on Monday, Seoul National University came in at 35th, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) at 46th, Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) at 83rd, and Korea University at 98th.
It was Korea University’s first appearance in the Top 100.
Sungkyunkwan University came 106th, Yonsei University 112th, and Hanyang University 171st.
The rankings cover 3,800 universities worldwide. Most of the top Korean universities improved their position.
They got high scores for academic reputation and employer reputation.
MIT topped the list, followed by Stanford, Harvard, Cambridge, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Oxford, University College London, ETH Zurich, Imperial College London and the University of Chicago.
Singapore performed best in Asia with National University of Singapore in 12th and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 13th.
Korean universities are improving in some areas but losing their international academic staff, who often feel they were only hired to give a global sheen to essentially inward-looking, inflexible institutions.
