Volkswagen will not after all take legal action against a sales ban here in the wake of wholescale cheating on environmental tests.
The Korean branch concluded talks with headquarters in Germany and told the Environment Ministry it will not contest the ban.
The Environment Ministry canceled the sales authorization of 80 models the German carmaker sold here since 2007 after the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office in July gave it a list of cars whose exhaust and noise test results were doctored.
The government also fined VW W17.8 billion for falsifying emissions data (US$1=W1,124).
The automaker was expected to sue, but industry insiders believe it decided it would be better not to antagonize the government further as it seeks fresh authorization.
The ministry has informed Volkswagen that it must admit wrongdoing before any new talks can start.
